This article intends to refer some events related to childhood throughout the 19th century, especially in its last quarter. In that time, were consolidated a conception of childhood as a period of life and the recognition of the child as being different from the adult, endowed with particularities, to be cared for, educated in a progression of complexity guided by respect for the physical and mental development of the child. The abandonment of children was beginning to be fought; the ideias that the child should grow and live with the family and that motherhood was the destination or main mission of life for all women were gaining strength. In Lisbon, new educational spaces for children appeared. Among them, the Kindergarten, a children´s school founded in 1882.
