Synopsis
On the occasion of the bicentenary of the death of King João VI and the beginning of the Regency of Princess Isabel Maria (1826), from the return of the Royal Family from Brazil (1821) to the coronation of Queen Maria II (1834), Portugal experienced three distinct and largely antagonistic political regimes. The first regime was established under the Constitution of 1822 (1822–1823), which came to an end with the counter-revolutionary movements of Vila-Francada (1823) and Abrilada (1824). The second occurred under the rule of the Constitutional Charter of 1826, during the Regency of Princess Isabel Maria (1826–1828). Finally, the third regime was marked by the restoration of absolutism during the reign of King Miguel, which ended with the military victory of the liberals (1828–1834).
With issue 25 of the Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal, we aim to gather recent research on this complex historical period, which remains insufficiently studied in many respects. The scope includes a wide range of problems, themes, and actors: the antecedents of the revolution (1807–1820), the succession crisis of the Crown, dissensions within the House of Braganza, the traumatic independence of Brazil, the political careers of Ministers, Deputies, Peers of the Realm, members of the High Clergy and Parish Priests, the political orientation of legislative production, wars, defeats and military victories, the Regency in Terceira Island, diplomacy, embassies, international relations, exiles, defectors, condemnations, revolts, and uprisings, as well as beliefs, myths, and representations. And, naturally, we also address the consequences of this intense political and doctrinal struggle for the history of Constitutional Monarchy (1834–1910).
