José Joaquim Vieira Godinho, born in the Captaincy of Minas Gerais, located in Portuguese America, in the first half of the eighteenth century, son of chief captain José de São Boaventura Vieira and D. Tereza Maria de Jesus, had an important service career for the History of Law. José Godinho was the first professor assigned to the Homeland Law chair, a discipline created in the context of the Reformulation of the Statutes of the University of Coimbra, in 1772. The following work presents a brief overview on the trajectory of this magistrate and his participation in university administration accumulating duties in the institution.
