A description of the sewerage of Lisbon before the 1755 Great Earthquake is presented, referring the practices for the operation of the network at that time. It is emphasized the difficulty of the royal power to improve the situation despite the knowledge that epidemics were expanded due to the poor sanitary conditions of the city.
