Watermarks and countermarks are graphic elements present on paper supports, barely noticeable to the naked eye, that have an informative character and can be used in areas of study such as Palaeography, Diplomatic Analysis or Conservation and Restoration, among others. Within the survey and characterization of watermarks in Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa, different watermarks were identified in the cover sheet of nine documents from royal and municipal nature. The survey of the watermarks allowed distributing the ten watermarks in six categories according to the nature of the motif, being the most frequent the geometric figures. Based on the identification of some of these watermarks, it was possible to establish that the royal documents are made with paper produced in Italy. The municipal documents and the frontpage are mainly produced in France, Spain, Sicily and the Netherlands.
